Obsession: Horror movie of the decade?
Spoiler Alert with Jimmy Nichols
It is officially October, which means it is time to welcome the start of spooky season. With the start of spooky season, it is also time to start looking at some of the best horror movies of all time.
One movie I have heard several people talking about this year is an independent horror movie, “Obsession,” which was released in US theaters back in May. Before watching this movie, I learned that the director is comedian Curry Barker.
After watching this movie, Barker is following in the footsteps of Jordan Peele as an example of a comedian making a smooth transition to the horror movie genre. Since comedy and horror both heavily rely on timing, it probably helps make that transition easy.
Barker excelled in directing this movie and joins a list of directors who have me excited to see what they release next.
One of the most impressive aspects of this movie is its relatively low budget for a movie. With only a budget of 750,000 dollars, the movie exceeded all expectations as it earned over 400 million dollars at the global box office.
The plot of the movie sees a character named Bear use a One Wish Willow to wish that his crush, Nikki, would love him more than anyone else in the world. After the wish works, she becomes obsessed (who would have guessed) with Bear.
Bear might be the worst character to ever exist in a horror movie. To start, he lacks the confidence to tell her he loves her.
He has had this crush on Nikki for several years, but he could not tell her because he was afraid of rejection. However, after a night out with their friends, she asks him if he has feelings for her.
For some reason, he says no; he only likes her as a friend. Unable to face the possible reality that she might not like him, he breaks the willow, wishing for his stupid wish.
The reason his wish is stupid is that there are millions of other things he could have done that would have helped him more. He could have asked for more confidence or to know her feelings.
Not only did he wish to potentially change her feelings for him, thus changing her, but he also wished that she would love him more than anyone else in the world. If you are going to make her love you, say something like I wish Nikki loved me more than a friend.
This opens the door for romance but would not change who she is. When the wish inevitably goes bad, Bear does anything he can do to not change the result.
