Troy’s National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) came together and made valentine’s cards last Thursday. Students were encouraged to come in and grab supplies to make homemade cards for residents of a local nursing home.
“We wanted to do something for the community,” said Shania Brunson, a junior exercise science major from Tuskegee, Alabama. “It feels so much more heartfelt giving handmade cards than just cards from the store.
“It’s so important to learn about loving your community. There’s so much going on in the world and not a lot of love. Little things, like giving back to the community, shows how everyone deserves love, no matter what.”

Card supplies, such as construction paper, markers and pens, were available for students to use to make their homemade cards. NPHC had candy available for students to snack on throughout the event and played music as people crafted their heartfelt notes.
Students at the event focused on the importance of community and coming together all the time, not just during the Valentine’s season.
“Events like these are important for students because, even though we all have our different backgrounds, we’re all in the same community,” said Asia Riley, a freshman biomedical sciences major from Eufaula, Alabama. “Even though we all don’t see each other every day, we’re all Trojans at the end of the day.”
However, students were not only encouraged to make cards for the elderly, but also to make cards for their family, friends or even for themselves.
“Self-love should be put first,” said Dadreanna Murry, a sophomore nursing major from Montgomery, Alabama. “You can’t love others until you love yourself.
“Events like these help promote self-love and other types of love as well.”
Troy’s NPHC consists of the Divine Nine sororities and fraternities. NPHC does regular events throughout the year. Last month, they held a basketball tournament, and the members are currently planning a dodgeball tournament.
“Later this month, we’re having a Black History Step Show,” Brunson said. “We’re hoping the community will come out for that.”
At the end of the year, NPHC is planning to team up with the National Pan-Hellenic Conference (NPHC) and the Interfraternity Council (IFC) to throw a party for the community.
