Students gathered for line dancing, music and customized dirty sodas during Footwork & Fizz, a Campus Life event designed to help students meet new people and get involved on campus.

The event gave students a chance to step outside their comfort zones while participating in a social activity with other members of the Troy University community.

Olivia Schwarte, a freshman accounting major from Troy, Alabama, serves as a freshman representative delegate for Freshman Forum, and was involved with the event through the Campus Life Committee.

“We just wanted to get people together, do something fun, just another opportunity to just kind of get out of your door and meet new people,” Schwarte said.

The event was planned by the Campus Life Committee as a way to encourage students to interact with people they may not already know.

Schwarte said events like Footwork & Fizz can be especially helpful for freshmen who are adjusting to college.

“We are all in the same spot,” Schwarte said. “We all just have to go to college, and just knowing that and having other people in the same spot is definitely reassuring.”

She encouraged students who may be nervous about attending campus events to take the opportunity to participate.

“Just do it, because you’re definitely not going to regret it,” Schwarte said.

For Zuzanna, a graduate student from Poland studying international business with a major in international relations, the event was an opportunity to finally learn line dancing.

After attending other events where she watched people line dance, she decided to try it herself.

“I was pretty bad at it, so I decided, okay, it’s time to learn,” Zuzanna said.

Line dancing became her favorite part of the night. She described the atmosphere as open, friendly and welcoming.

“I think everybody came here to have fun,” Zuzanna said. “Everybody’s very open, happy and very friendly.”

The event also helped Zuzanna feel more connected to campus. As an international student, she said the welcoming environment at Troy has made her college experience different from what she is used to in Poland.

“I feel like I’m living in a movie,” Zuzanna said. “People are already open, really friendly.”

Zuzanna also enjoyed the opportunity to meet people and experience a different part of campus life. Although she did not try the dirty sodas, she noticed the drinks were sweeter than what she was used to back home.

Lucas Kalba, a freshman political science major from Pelham, Alabama, also attended the event. Kalba serves as a freshman representative in Freshman Forum under the Student Welfare Committee.

Kalba saw the event as an opportunity for students to come together and socialize. One of the highlights was the dirty soda station, which offered Sprite, Dr Pepper and Coca-Cola along with different syrups and creamer for students to mix into their drinks.

“I just hope a lot of people attend and have fun,” Kalba said.

Kalba encouraged students to attend more campus events, especially those who may be hesitant to go alone.

“Just get out of your comfort zone and be willing to attend events,” Kalba said. “You never know what you can turn it into.”

Footwork & Fizz gave students from different backgrounds a chance to connect through an activity that was new to some and familiar to others. The event showed how campus activities can create opportunities for students to meet people, try new things and become more involved in university life.
