The History Club recently held a presentation on the history of various monsters to get into the spirit of Halloween. The dreadful history of the abhorrent fiends was surely a suspenseful shock for the unassuming Trojans with the days nearing All Hallows’ Eve.

Three students presented the history of horrific monsters during the meeting. One presentation was of flaky corpses that rise again from the grave - how more could one ever calm be, than when you’ve come to be a zombie. Another student’s presentation was of mystical women who wear narrow hats - when dealing with women who work in a coven, better be smart or you’re thrown in the oven. When you see them boiling pitch, you’ll surely think twice when crossing a witch. The final student’s presentation was of bloodthirsty vagrants that hunt in the night - The dark town lit up as the people began fire, the night wasn't cold, it was for the vampire.

The meeting closed with a game of jeopardy-style trivia based on the monsters from the presentation, which added an interactive aspect and reinforced the knowledge of the presentation in the listeners. History Club meetings are aimed at being fun and inviting for Trojans of any major to participate.

“We do like to do more fun meetings. [...] It was fun to learn about the background behind some of these stereotypical things that we have in our pop culture, I really enjoyed the presentation on vampires, I never really thought of vampires being a psychological non-physical form,” said Keira Tessalone, the president of the History Club and senior European history major from Dothan, Alabama

“You don’t have to be a history major to join, if you just have an inkling of interest in history, come on down.”

The presentations on monsters reported to be informative and entertaining, but History Club had and will have more meetings on various historical topics. Some students still remember presentations from years prior that continue to be a source of wisdom.

“My favorite presentation was the one about zombies, my favorite thing I learned about zombies in that presentation was that they come from the country of Haiti,” said Dani Kimbrough, a two-year member of history club.

“My favorite presentation I ever heard would have to be last year when Dr. Carlson came and presented his research on civil war veterans.”

History Club’s members spend a long time planning and preparing for their events. Students take time out of their schedules to pursue a love of history and educate their fellow club members.

“At the beginning of every semester, we’ll sit down and plan out every meeting, we’ll send that out to the professors and depending on what our meetings entail, we’ll usually partner with another club if they reach out, or we’ll reach out to them, like, next meeting we’ll be partnering with Common Ground,” Tessalone said.

“Usually, I’ll release the list of what we are doing for the coming weeks to try and draw in presenters for that so it’s not just the officers who are presenting, and then we’ll send out the advertisements a week before.”

History club can be a place to find new friends with common interests and get involved with the community.

“I love getting together with friends over different historical things that interest us, I love all of the community outreach opportunities we have, [...] last year we did a fundraiser for veterans, so it’s really nice,” said Madison Whiddon, a two-year member of History Club.

History Club will also be having a book drive to collect books for a new Little Library soon.

“We want to give back to our community this semester, so we are going to be placing a Little Library at the Troy ball fields out by the recreation center, so this week through dead day, we are going to be collecting books and around that week, we will be placing the little library,” Tessalone said.

“Donations will be accepted at our history club meetings, but also, a gray tote will be placed on the second floor of Patterson by the office in the center. Since this is being placed at the recreation center, books for teens are preferred.”

The meeting mentioning morbid monsters allowed students to gather together and learn about history. As Halloween passes, History Club will continue to linger just beyond the view of its next victim, silently waiting for curious students to wander in… to their doom.
