'Far Sector' is impressive

Taking another peek into the Doc Kirby comic library, I was given a series collection novel of "Far Sector,” which takes place in the Green Lantern universe. Now, I unfortunately do have to say that I am NOT a huge Green Lantern fan, nor really a DC fan outside of Batman, but I was willing to rise to the challenge and give it a shot.
I do admit I was impressed with it, all things considered. I thought it was going to be a Green Lantern spin-off cash grab as most things are nowadays, but I can tell just by the first few pages that a lot of love went into this project.
The story is pretty interesting: Sojourner "Jo" Mullein is chosen by the Green Lantern Corps to serve the universe in an incredibly massive city on the other side of the galaxy. She served in the army and eventually became a cop before donning the ring, but she was chosen because of her bravery and courage, as most Green Lanterns are.
Her recruitment isn't completely explained, nor is her special ring, which doesn't need to be recharged by a special charger only located on the Corps' HQ on planet Oa. It makes sense why she gets this one, especially because she's so far away from Oa, but she just has to wait for it to naturally recharge.
Her orders send her to The City Enduring. No, it's not "the city of Enduring." That's the full title: The City Enduring. If the name didn't tip it off, this is not your typical place. It's a utopian society with 20 billion inhabitants that is just like what you'd imagine when you think of the future. Everyone wears weird outfits, insanely complex architecture and technologies that are so ridiculously advanced that no one really has to do anything.
How do they keep so many people in line? Everyone volunteered themselves to have their emotions regulated by the government in order to have such a peaceful and functional society.
Everyone basically walks around like zombies, but there's been no crime for centuries. At least until now, making it Jo's problem to find out what happened and why it happened. She also exposes government corruption, a giant drug underworld and many other issues plaguing the city all while trying to solve the case.
I really like the dynamic of her character. She's very similar to Pattinson's Batman in a way, where she's a detective first and superhero second. The writing is very solid with the twists and discoveries having a lot of weight behind them, which works very well with a Green Lantern story. The artwork is stunning all throughout, and the world he builds for The City Enduring is so majestic on every page. Very solid read. The Kirby Comic Shop is 2-for-2.
