Emma's Enlightenments: There is strength in redirection

This Week’s Advice: Strength in Redirection.

So many of us are afraid of failure or rejection. We hide what we actually want because we are worried about one simple thing. The word “no."

We think being told no, or failing, makes us weak and not worthy of trying again. This is wrong. Real strength comes from trying.

There have been so many instances at Troy where I have been so scared of failing, to the point where I didn’t try at all. I restricted myself because I couldn’t stand the thought of not being great.

For example, there have been instances where I didn’t do an event I thought seemed so fun because I was scared to make myself look funny.

I watched as all my sisters had fun because I couldn’t get up and try. After this, I told myself to start saying yes. Yes, to trying new things. Yes, to not being scared.

I know everyone has heard it before, but I have to repeat it because it’s just so true.

Rejection is redirection. Do not fear what has not happened. By not stepping through the door, how can you see the sun? Do not restrict yourself because of an off chance of failure.

Even if failure does happen, it doesn’t mean giving up. You are worth so much more than that.

It doesn’t matter how many times you fail, or how many people don’t like you; it matters that you tried. If you failed a test, stepped on toes, or even just slacked, that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world.

Give yourself the chance of redirection. Moreover, don’t be afraid of what happens next. Feel sad about not being able to go one way but keep walking the other. You can’t stop your journey because you fell.

Even if things are different for a while, that doesn’t mean they’re bad. They’re just not what you’re used to. Redirection is a good thing. Take a risk. Don’t let yourself down.

We thrive on change and success, but we can’t reach these unless we try.

In these upcoming weeks, try at least one new thing, and don’t fear doing it wrong. If you’re doing something, you’re already right. Pick yourself back up, and pick one thing, easy or hard. Don’t fall behind because you’re scared of thoughts.

Anything is something.
