As “Hannah Montana” marks its 20th anniversary, students and fans alike are reflecting on the show’s lasting impact and the role it played in shaping their childhoods.
For many, the Disney Channel hit was more than just entertainment; it taught life lessons about friendship, identity and most importantly, music.
“I grew up watching ‘Hannah Montana,’ and it was my introduction to pop and honestly where I think a lot of my fashion comes from,” said Liliana Heaton, a sophomore broadcast journalism major from Seale, Alabama.
Beyond its cultural influence, the show also resonated on a personal level with young girls across the world.
“The show meant a lot to me,” Heaton said. “I loved seeing a female lead going through being in the public eye and just general girlhood.
“I just turned 20, so this feels so nostalgic. Being the same age as the show is definitely making me feel extra old.”
Other fans shared similar feelings of nostalgia regarding the show.
“Growing up, I was bullied, so the idea of having that secret double life where you could dress up but still be true to yourself made me feel seen,” said Haley Rucker, a senior criminal justice major from Wetumpka, Alabama. “The show was my entire childhood.
“I’d come home from school and have a laugh after a hard day or go to my room and dance and sing all the song.”
Two decades later, fans say the show’s legacy remains strong. With recent attention surrounding the anniversary and the release of the “Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special” documentary, some fans are seeing the franchise in new ways.
“It felt like the documentary was more about Miley Cyrus and how being on the show affected her rather than the show itself,” Rucker said. “Seeing the set after that many years made me feel like that little girl eating my cereal watching again.”
Sentiment for the show is growing even stronger for most fans. As they celebrate the milestone anniversary, many are excited to revisit a defining piece of their childhood.
“I’m just so excited to be getting the best of both worlds again,” Heaton said.
