Every Thursday night, B. Graves holds a trivia night. This night is filled
with jokes, laughter and overall joy, bringing people from the city of Troy together as well as the students at the university.
“Getting together with friends in a central location in Troy is something I really enjoy,” said Bryson Grimsley, a senior in music education from Abbeville, Alabama, who shared his experience from last Thursday’s trivia night. “This gives me and my trivia partners something to not only relax but challengeus while spending time together.”
The term trivia comes from a Latin word meaning “little things,” a fitting word for an
activity centered on small pieces of information. During the event, teams will work collaboratively while quietly sharing answers and relying on each other’s knowledge.
This team-based approach shows why group trivia is well known, with those involved bringing knowledge from all kinds of topics. Facts that might not seem important in general often end up helping the whole team.
Overall, the event will show how learning and teamwork can turn a simple game
into a fun game and an engaging experience.
“Trivia offered a nice brain teaser beyond my usual coursework,” said Noelle Downing, a junior history major from Jacksonville, Alabama. “It gave me a chance to challenge myself in a relaxing setting while stepping away from academic responsibilities.”
Downing also noted that working with a team made the experience more
enjoyable and created a low-pressure way to stay mentally active outside of classes.
“Even if you’re hesitant, just show up,” Downing said. “It’s a really welcoming atmosphere, and the people are very friendly.”
Thursday nights remain just as memorable for Tyler Ray, a Troy local.
Ray and his team, “El Gato Is Lazy,” has been attending trivia nights for the past eight years. The team has been champions of an annual tournament for four consecutive years.
Through their involvement with Challenge Entertainment across the Southeastern United
States, the team also had the opportunity to compete at the national level in New Orleans, where they placed 50th in the nation out of nearly 300 teams.
“Trivia is a lot of fun,” Ray said. “You don’t need to know as much as you think you do.
“It’s a great way to hang out with friends and pass time during the week.”
When the night ends, one thing is clear: trivia at B. Graves is always waiting for visitors every Thursday night at 6:30 p.m.
