SGA requests better services

Christopher Shaffer, dean of library services, will visit the Student Government Association’s executive meeting Tuesday to discuss the current library hours, which SGA has requested to change.

SGA academic life committee chair Farrah Gaston, a junior biomedical sciences major from Camden, said that there have been several attempts to persuade Shaffer to extend the library hours this semester.

Gaston said she has reached the conclusion that the reason Shaffer is against the change is due to his perception of the library as primarily a resource center above everything else.

“I think he sees the library as a resource place,” Gaston said. “He doesn’t understand why it should be the primary study spot.”

In an interview with the Tropolitan last semester, Shaffer said that the extension of library hours was a matter of finding funding.

On Tuesday, Feb. 23, both sides will have a chance to express their opinion. The meeting will be open to all students.

Students can also express their opinion of the dining

services at the Food Advisory Council of Troy meeting on Monday, Feb. 22, at 12:45 p.m. at Faculty Dining.

Natalie Brown, an accounting major sophomore from Roanoke, who attended the last FACT meeting in November, said they discussed the Thanksgiving plans.

“One girl said, ‘I think you should offer more of these options,’ and then they were like, ‘Oh my goodness, yes, we’ll do that!’” Brown said.

Brown also said the staff heard some complaints about service and promised to address it. The issue of questionable personnel attitude still stands, according to Ashton Prouty, a sophomore political science major from Spanish Fort.

“I was there the other day, and it (Trojan Dining Hall) closes at 7 o’clock,” Prouty said. “I went to the (drink) fountain at 6:38 (p.m.), and it was turned off. It’s just things like that. And then a guy came up to me and told us to leave at 6:45 (p.m.)”

The Trojan Dining hours have been a sore spot for many students, which was reflected in the Freshman Forum’s survey at the beginning of the fall semester.

On Tuesday, SGA passed the Freshman Forum’s bill about changing the dining hall’s dinner hours from the current 4:30 to 7 p.m., to 5 to 8 p.m.

Blakelee Clack, a freshman undeclared major from Dothan who presented the resolution, said the concern will now be addressed to Sodexo.
